1. Official CDC Storage Duration Table

The following table reflects current recommendations from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for freshly expressed breast milk:

LocationTemperatureRecommended Duration
Room Temperature25 °C (77 °F) or coolerUp to 4 hours
Refrigerator4 °C (40 °F) or colderUp to 4 days
Freezer−18 °C (0 °F) or colder6 months ideal, up to 12 months acceptable

2. Thawed Milk and Leftover Bottle Milk

  • Refrigerator-thawed milk: Must be consumed within 24 hours. Count the 24 hours from the moment the milk is completely thawed.
  • Never refreeze thawed milk.
  • Leftover milk in a feeding bottle: Consume within 2 hours. Discard any milk remaining after 2 hours.

Do not mix warm freshly pumped milk with chilled or frozen milk. Cool fresh milk first before combining, and date the batch by the oldest milk's date.

3. Why Beluna Defaults to 3 Days Instead of 4

In the Beluna app, refrigerator milk is flagged after 3 days. This is an intentional safety buffer: the CDC's 4-day guideline is an upper theoretical limit under ideal conditions. In busy homes where refrigerator doors open frequently, staying one day below the maximum ensures optimal freshness.

4. Practical Best Practices for Storage

  • Label with expression date and time: Record the date pumped, not the expiration date.
  • Store in small portions: 60 to 120 ml (2 to 4 oz) portions minimize waste.

5. Transporting Milk for Work and Commute

Use an insulated cooler bag with frozen ice packs. Expressed milk remains safe for up to 24 hours during travel.

6. Managing Power Outages

If frozen milk still contains ice crystals, it is still safe and can remain in the freezer.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

How long can breast milk stay in the refrigerator?

The CDC recommends up to 4 days at 4 °C or colder. Beluna uses a conservative 3-day reminder for home safety.
